Building Confidence in Carbon Dioxide Removal – The Role of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)

Date: September 23rd, 2025
Time: 12:00 PM (UK Time)
Location: Online (Zoom)

Scaling up Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) requires more than technological innovation. It depends on robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems that can ensure credibility, comparability, and trust. Without clear standards and consistent approaches, it is difficult to assess performance, reduce uncertainties, or enable certification at scale.

This seminar, led by project researchers Evangelos Mouchos and Will Savage, explored how MRV can provide that foundation and introduced the public consultation on MRV launched within the C-SINK project. The consultation invites input from project developers, researchers, and stakeholders on low-cost tools for quantifying removals, with a focus on addressing variances in sampling and testing methodologies.

Grounded in Quality Management Systems (ISO 9000), the proposed MRV framework seeks to enhance quality assurance and control across a diverse set of CDR approaches. Feedback will directly shape the MRV design, inform the drafting of pre-standards, and contribute to alignment with ongoing European and international standardisation initiatives.

In this seminar, participants gained insights into the evolving landscape of MRV for CDR, learned about emerging approaches to address uncertainty, and had the opportunity to contribute to the development of best practices and standards.

Speakers:
  • Evangelos Mouchos, Senior Research Geoscientist at Mine Environment Management Ltd & Senior Research Associate at University of Bristol.
  • Will Savage, Project Engineer at Mine Environment Management Ltd.
The discussion was moderated by Navraj Singh Ghaleigh, Senior Lecturer in Climate Law at the University of Edinburgh.
