The C-SINK Research Seminar series continued with an in-depth exploration of the latest trends in carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Led by Dr. Steve Smith, Arnell Associate Professor of Greenhouse Gas Removal and Executive Director of Oxford Net Zero and CO2RE, this discussion examined current and future global CDR efforts, highlighting the key complexities and implications for monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) and standards.
The session also addressed the distinction between “active” and “passive” carbon uptake, emphasising the need for a more nuanced approach to CDR accounting. Drawing on recent research, we also explored how removals are currently quantified, potential overestimations in national reporting, and the broader implications for climate policy.
Speakers:
- Dr. Steve Smith – Arnell Associate Professor of Greenhouse Gas Removal and the Executive Director Oxford Net Zero and CO2RE will lead the session.
- Frida Sund Falkevik, Seconded National Expert at the European Commission, will serve as a discussant.
- Navraj Singh Ghaleigh, Senior Lecturer in Climate Law at the University of Edinburgh, will moderate the discussion.
