Microbial CO₂ Fixation (MCO₂): Turning Soils into Powerful Carbon Sinks

Date: February 5, 2026
Time: 13:00 CET
Location: Online (Zoom)

Scaling up Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) requires leveraging nature-based solutions alongside technological approaches. Microbial CO₂ Fixation (MCO₂) offers a promising pathway, using beneficial soil microbes to capture atmospheric CO₂ and convert it into long-lasting organic and inorganic carbon, while enhancing soil fertility and crop productivity.

This research seminar, led by Darina Styriakova, CEO of ekolive, will explore the science, mechanisms, and real-world applications of MCO₂. Participants will learn how microbial biostimulants activate the soil microbiome, accelerate carbon sequestration, and deliver co-benefits such as improved crop yields, resilience to drought and disease, and new revenue streams through carbon credits.

The session will also highlight findings from field trials across Germany, Slovakia, and Croatia, demonstrating measurable impacts on soil carbon storage and ecosystem health. Attendees will gain practical insights into optimizing MCO₂ implementation on farmland and understanding the role of soil microbiomes in scalable, verifiable carbon removal.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Darina Štyriaková, Chief Executive Officer of ekolive (speaker)
  • Murali Thoppil, Associate Researcher at the University of Bristol, and Member of the Bristol Advisory Committee on Climate Change (BACCC) (discussant)

The discussion will be moderated by Navraj Singh Ghaleigh, Senior Lecturer in Climate Law at the University of Edinburgh.
