The role of BECCS within a future European CDR market

Date: May 27, 2026
Time: 8:30 AM – 5 PM CET
Location: KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden

As the urgency of large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) becomes increasingly clear, so does the need for rigorous science, credible governance, and coordinated action across research, policy, and industry.

This C-SINK workshop, titled “The Role of BECCS within a Future European CDR Market“, and organised by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), will be hosted in that spirit. As part of the workshop, participants will be invited to Policy Roundtable Dialogues to jointly – in a smaller break-out group setting – reflect on key policy, governance, and market design challenges, and generate concrete insights and actionable recommendations. These dialogues will be led by the Middle East Technical University (METU).

C-SINK will establish the foundations upon which to build a standardised and transparent European CDR market with trustworthy accounting methodologies based on robust MRV pre-standards and policy strategies. The day will bring together researchers, policymakers, technology providers, and practitioners to advance a constructive dialogue on the responsible role of BECCS within a future European CDR market.

Workshop Programme

The programme is structured around four thematic sessions with speakers highlighting:

  1. BECCS use cases, exploring concrete BECCS deployments and the current state of the technology
  2. Assessment methodologies and governance frameworks, covering social acceptability, techno-economic analysis, and systematic evaluation of CDR approaches
  3. Risks and uncertainties, addressing integrated assessments and the responsible deployment of BECCS
  4. Support mechanisms, including public and private finance, cross-regional perspectives, and funding
    frameworks

The event’s lineup of speakers will include:

  • Covadonga Pevida Garcia and Fernando Rubiera (Spanish National Research Council)
  • Dilip Khatiwada (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
  • Eleni Psochia (MNLT Innovations)
  • Fedra Vanhuyse (Uppsala University; Ghent University; Stockholm Environment Institute)
  • Francis X. Johnson (Stockholm Environment Institute)
  • Jenny Westerberg (Profu)
  • Kenneth Möllersten (Swedish Environmental Research Institute –IVL)
  • Kjersti Maria Persson Skare (Swedish Energy Agency)
  • Navraj Singh Ghaleigh, University of Edinburgh
  • Raul Savimaa (CESERE)
  • Sandun Randombage (Stockholm Environment Institute; Ghent University)
  • Zohre Kurt (Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen; METU)
